This course is open to potential and existing leaders from any Surrey Area Ramblers Group. It will include leading requirements and techniques, with a focus on learning and improving map and compass skills, including a practical exercise in the outdoors. The course will be held at the Hale Institute Village Hall (near Farnham) and will be run by three experienced Farnham & District leaders.
For more information and booking please complete the Registration Form here. Please book early as the course is open to all Surrey Ramblers Members and it usually fills up quickly. The morning session will be classroom based and after the lunch break we will be outdoors, practising your new skills.
Practical Arrangements and Requirements
Refreshments: Coffee, tea and water will be provided, but please bring your own snacks and lunch, plus alternative drinks if you wish.
Stationery: Please bring: Pen/pencil and paper/notebook.
Maps: OS 1:25,000 map (OS 145). Recommended supplier - Dash4It, the largest wholesaler of OS maps in the UK, so they always have the latest versions, plus good discounts (currently 40% and free post and packing). https://dash4it.co.uk
Compass: Ideally a protractor type, ie Silva Expedition 4 or Suunto equivalent, but in degrees not mils (latter type sometimes called a military compass or similar). Available from OS or Dash4It, or Cotswolds/Millets etc.
Walking Gear: Jacket, waterproofs, boots, hat, scarf, gloves, suncream (be prepared for all weathers). Poles not required as they are not compatible with compasses!!
After the lunch break, we will be outdoors practising your new skills.
